Internet of Things
(IoT): The Way
Forward to Smart
Sustainable Cities

According to the International Energy Agency, building systems contribute to more than 47% of the world’s energy consumption, and is projected to continue rising amidst rapid urbanization.

As the global demand for energy increases, sustainability and energy efficiency aren’t only financial goals, but also pose business challenges. To help our customers achieve these goals, Johnson Controls leverages on IoT for buildings - connecting physical devices and equipment together in a network using sensors, software and actuators. This integration allows data to be collected and processed more efficiently, providing useful insights to create comfortable and conducive environments that are also greener and more sustainable for occupants.

Johnson Controls is at the forefront of developing innovative IoT capabilities to complement our equipment service. Through working with leading technology companies such as Microsoft, we are able to offer a fully integrated approach that benefits building owners and facility managers in the following areas:

1 Minimize repair costs and downtime – Combining real-time collection of data with cloud capabilities allows for remote monitoring and faster troubleshooting and issues identification. The streamlined process enables repair and maintenance work to be completed in hours instead of days.
2 Maximize lifespan of building systems and hardware – By leveraging data analytics
capabilities to carry out predictive maintenance , fallouts from potential issues are mitigated, thereby extending the lifespan of the systems and equipment.
3 Cost savings through increased efficiency – To increase the energy efficiency of existing systems, data collected is analyzed and used to identify and address key areas of equipment and system level inefficiencies.
4 Seamless connectivity and control – By connecting hardware and software through the
Internet, we provide clients with more control of their building systems, empowering them to make smarter, savvier decisions at any time.

In an increasingly connected world, the Internet of Things offers unlimited possibilities, allowing us to redefine every aspect of the industry to build a better place for people to work, live and play.

Sudhi Sinha, Vice President, Product Development, Building Technology & Services at Johnson Controls, share more on
