How is your city’s smart city journey going?
|
|
In 2005, former US president Bill Clinton challenged a tech company to make cities more sustainable, kick-starting the business of smart city technologies. 13 years on, almost every city in the world has embarked on its own smart city journey and each one is different. To get a sense of how they are doing, we spoke to more than 150 city leaders in 12 countries, including China, India, and Singapore.
Some things we learnt – data analytics and machine learning are the top technologies cities expect to adopt over the next five years. The most popular solutions already implemented include LED street lighting and city data platforms. For further insights, download the full report here.

Singapore organizations are inculcating green behavior
Energy efficiency is no longer a trend in Singapore – in fact it has become second nature for building developers, owners and managers so it’s not at all surprising that organizations invest heavily on energy efficiency measures. What’s interesting is that they are also spending on energy focused behavioral or educational programs to inculcate a green mindset among employees and stakeholders. Click here to find out what other ways Singapore-based organizations are going green in our Energy Efficiency Index.

Nurturing next-gen engineers and technicians
Recognizing that Singapore needs a highly skilled engineering and technical workforce, we partnered the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to launch the ITE-Johnson Controls Building Technologies and Solutions Centre, a first fully-functioning chiller plant system designed for a classroom setting in Singapore. It makes theory lessons come alive for students, enabling them to apply knowledge to real-life smart building management systems and assimilate quickly into the actual work environment.

Building a Smart Workforce for a Smart Nation
We recently hosted a thought leadership forum – Smart Workforce for A Smart Nation – featuring experts from the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, the Singapore Green Building Council, Surbana Jurong, Institute of Technical Education and Johnson Controls. Themes explored include securing Singapore’s future, thriving as a Smart Nation and preparing our workforce – our audience came away with a reminder not to fear technology, but instead harness it strategically to bridge the gap between where we are today and where we’d like to be so we can build human capabilities and free up time.
